The scientific journal Nature Genetics has published two research papers detailing specific genes that may increase the risk of a person developing motor neurone disease. Much of the research was funded through money raised by the Ice Bucket challenge – demonstrating that as well as raising awareness of the condition
Although further research is needed to understand what part the NEK 1 gene plays in the development of MND, what has been discovered will provide scientists with an important new target for developing new treatments.
It is hoped that through further investment in research and discoveries such as this one a cure will be found for MND and that the legacy of the ice-bucket challenge will help achieve that goal sooner. Click onth elink below to read the MND latest blog.
