At the #WeStandTogether event that CVA hosted in April 2017 in response to the racist attack on young Recker Ahmed in Croydon, CVA gave a commitment to continue the dialogue with grassroots refugee support organisations and to support those on the ground working with asylum seekers and refugee communities. This is an update of that commitment.
From our conversations with workers and volunteers in the community, you have told us that you would value the coming together of other refugee support organisations and looking at ways in which groups can share ideas, resources, challenges and experience. Groups have also told us that they don’t have the funding / resources to meet the needs of the many young people and families that turn to them for help. CVA is committed to support refugee-led groups in Croydon to work closer with each other and indeed with other relevant agencies. CVA is also committed to help bring additional resources into Croydon to support those groups that are delivering valuable services on the ground to our refugee communities.
To continue the dialogue, CVA is convening a meeting for refugee-led groups to come together and share amongst other similar groups the fantastic work that each one is doing and map where there are gaps in provision for certain groups or communities. What we want to do is support community organisations to build upon their strengths and work more closely with others where appropriate. From our conversations, groups have told us of ideas that they have for projects to bring in funds to Croydon. One such idea is for targeted projects to support individuals from refugee communities to access meaningful employment, training and enterprise opportunities. We want to explore this and other ideas.
If you are a frontline group working with refugee communities in Croydon and are interested in receiving more resources for your work through collaborative projects, then this meeting is for you.
The date of the meeting is Tuesday 1 August 2017, from 6pm to 8pm. Venue, CVA Resource Centre, 82 London Rd, Croydon CR0 2TB.
Note: this meeting is targeted at refugee-led organisations or those local grassroots community groups that are working primarily with refugee communities or asylum seekers. There will be another opportunity for groups that are not refugee-led but work with refugees as part of their wider activities to come together in September. However, this meeting on 1 August is targeted at the small frontline organisations that are run by members of the refugee community for their community.
