GoodGym is a charity that combines getting fit through running and doing good in the local community. Every week a group of runs from central Croydon to somewhere in the borough where we can make a difference to a local community group, charity or public space. They tackle a variety of jobs from planting in parks, litter picking in playgrounds, collecting clothes for the homeless and leafleting for community events. It’s a fantastic feeling knowing that you’re getting fitter while you’re doing something to help your community.

So far they’ve been on 21 runs to different parts of the borough including Thornton Heath, South Norwood, central Croydon and south Croydon. These are a couple of tasks:

  • Thornton Heath Rec for some digging, weeding and planting
  • One of their first jobs was in the beautiful Grangewood Park where they prepared the flowerbeds for planting.

They also help out on a more personal level with older people. Social isolation in older people is a real problem nowadays and they can also pair up runners with an older person to visit once a week for a chat and a cuppa – it can make a real difference to their week.

They are always on the lookout for more tasks – indoor and outdoor – they can help with and more runners to join in the fun. It doesn’t matter if you’re new to running or a sub-3 hour marathon runner all abilities are welcome and catered for.

It’s not just all about the running either - there are regular social events and meet ups with other GoodGym groups across London.
