A communities connection with local bird life is set to grow after pupils from Winterbourne Girls school in Croydon produced a bird board to be placed in their local park. Visitors to Thornton Heath Recreation ground in the north of the borough will be encouraged to identify the sights and sounds of the varied bird life in this urban green space.
ABCD project worker Paul Macey approached the RSPB for some help when Winterbourne Girls school teacher, who regularly took students in the rec for field trips, asked for help to get some illustrations for a Birdlife noticeboard with the 13 different species of birds they had observed.
Luckily the birds requested a woodpecker (black spotted), sparrow, starling, crow, wood pigeon, robin, chaffinch, blue tit, green finch, sparrow hawk, magpie, jay and blackbird were all avaliable. An online “storyset” of illustrations was prepared which were free for teh school to publish alongside a credit to the RSPB.
