Understanding Abuse from the Inside Out: A Real-World Guide for Safeguarding
Professionals. A real-world, story-led safeguarding session designed to help professionals across sectors understand how abuse and grooming really happen, why the signs are often missed, and what you can do to better protect children.
Trainer: Jeremy Indika, https://jeremyindika.com/
This session offers a real-world, emotionally grounded guide to understanding child sexual abuse — not just what it is, but how it works from the inside out. Through personal story, frontline examples, and practical insight, we explore how abuse can be hidden in plain sight, how grooming feels to a child, and why some children never show clear signs. Whether you’re in social work, healthcare, education, policing or the voluntary sector, this session will challenge assumptions, deepen your perspective, and strengthen your safeguarding practice.
Learning Objectives:
- Deepen understanding of how child sexual abuse and grooming actually happen—including how they feel to a child and why they are often hidden.
- Recognise that there is no single 'type' of child who is abused and that signs are often subtle, emotional, or entirely invisible.
- Explore real-life examples to challenge common assumptions and strengthen your ability to spot early warning signs.
- Develop practical ways to create safer environments where children are more likely to speak up and less likely to be harmed.
- Reflect on your own role within the safeguarding system and identify small but powerful actions you can take to improve outcomes for children.
