Explore alienating behaviours and understand children’s reluctance, resistance, or refusal to have a relationship with a parent or adult.
This session introduces practitioners to current UK guidance and best practice on alienating behaviours (often described as parental alienation) and encourages curiosity regarding a child’s reluctance, resistance, or refusal to have a relationship with a parent or family member. It highlights the importance of holistic curiosity and maintaining a neutral, child-focused approach.
Learning objectives
- Understand key definitions from the Family Justice Council guidance (2024)
- Understand what alienating behaviours are and how they differ from other post-separation difficulties
- Recognise the signs that a child may be experiencing harmful relational dynamics
- Appreciate the impact of alienating behaviours on children’s emotional and social development
- Understand interactions between alienating behaviours and domestic abuse
