Six month extension announced for programme tackling food insecurity

Extension for programme tackling food insecurity

Croydon Voluntary Action (CVA) is pleased to announce that it has secured extended funding to continue its vital work as part of the Mayor of London’s Food Roots programme.

Led by Ben Taylor, this six-month extension ensures CVA can further strengthen its commitment to addressing food insecurity in the local community and support more residents facing financial hardship.

The Food Roots programme, initiated by the Greater London Authority (GLA), aims to tackle the growing issue of food insecurity through sustainable and resilient local food systems. The initiative empowers local partnerships to move beyond emergency food aid by developing long-term solutions that address the root causes of hunger and deprivation, particularly financial hardship.

Over the next six months, CVA will continue to work with the network of food support providers across Croydon who are providing access to food, financial advice, and additional support for Croydon’s most vulnerable residents.

The project wants to work closely with local authorities, civil society groups and businesses to implement a more holistic approach to food insecurity, ensuring residents can access wraparound services like Healthy Start and other financial support mechanisms.

Ben Taylor said: “We are thrilled to receive this extension, which enables us to build on the progress we’ve made so far. This additional funding allows us to continue our mission of not only providing food support but addressing the underlying issues that force people into food insecurity. Through stronger partnerships and sustainable initiatives, we aim to create a more resilient community in Croydon.”

The Food Roots Network, supported by the GLA, has been instrumental in developing innovative local responses to the cost of living crisis. This crisis has dramatically increased the number of Londoners needing support.

This six-month extension will enable CVA to scale up its efforts, continue its advocacy for systemic change and deliver enhanced services that are designed to empower local residents.

The funding will also provide much-needed resources for CVA’s staff and volunteers, who have been instrumental in delivering these essential services.
