Expanding Cultural Competences (Croydon Safeguarding Children Partnership)
Thursday 24 November 2022
10:00 to 12:00
Supporting professionals to have greater confidence when working with young people who may identify as LGBTQ+ and present with self-harm and/or suicide risk.
The Croydon Safeguarding Children Partnership (CSCP) alongside the London South Bank University (LSBU) are developing a 2-part training course. This is in response to the work of the CSCP Mental Health Priority Group who considered a number of suicides and serious harm incidents where an additional feature of the case, included that the young person’s gender or identity was different to the one assigned at birth. Professionals felt that enhancing their confidence to encounter questions and challenges as well as balance the risk when a young person is self-harming or has suicidal tendencies would support the quality of the trusted relationship and be more likely to have positive outcomes for this cohort of young people.
We want to make use of the diverse knowledge and experience that already exists in our safeguarding workforce. You may have lived experience and/or professional experience that can inform what could be included, how it could be designed, delivered, evaluated, and made sustainable.
We are asking professionals who have a desire to influence practice in the following areas to contribute to our scoping group to ensure we get the training content right.
- gender-expression,
- gender identity,
- gender diversity, equity, and inclusion,
- gender within intersectionality,
- sexual expression,
- sexuality and identity,
- relationship diversity, and
- relationship literacy within an intersectional framework
- young people who self-harm
- young people who have completed suicide or have suicidal
- tendencies
- young people’s mental health
