2 Day Course: Understanding Mental Health Peer Support Session 2 (One Croydon Training Programme)

This is the second session of this two day training course on Monday, 24 & Monday 31 March from 09.30 - 15:00.

In this training the concept of peer support is explored, including its principles and key components. Safeguarding in a peer support context will also be discussed, with a focus on protecting adults in such settings. Looking at various types of peer support, including grassroots, NHS, digital, and in-person models and is designed for Croydon's frontline staff, group facilitators and volunteers in the community.

Session 2: We will cover different mental health conditions, with a focus on Croydon’s mental health system. Bereavement, roles, and responsibilities in peer support, homelessness, and medications are also discussed.

Participants will learn about group activities, the Equality Act 2010, neurodivergence, harm reduction, and self-soothing practices like music and creativity. The session explores how these can be incorporated into peer support.

The training concludes with a discussion on hearing voices, facilitation skills, and planning groups. Participants will also learn how to use the CREOSE acronym, along with signposting for further support. The session ends with feedback and a pep talk to motivate peer support workers.
