Exploring the role and impact of cultural stigmas affecting the mental health of children and families from Black and minority communities.

 

Objectives

  • Explore the meaning of cultural stigmas and the impact of 'race', ethnicity, and spirituality on experiences of emotional distress

  • Examine the impact of cultural, professional, institutional, structural, and historical victimisation and discrimination on cultural stigmas

  • Explore some of the risks and challenges associated with negative cultural attitudes towards adult mental illness and neurodiversity in children

  • Examine the role of cultural competence in developing strategies to overcome racial stereotyping and stigmas in mental health provision

  • Examine personal, cultural, professional, and organisational barriers to children and their families accessing mental health support

  • Identify strategies to improve safeguarding and overcome stigmatising mental distress among Black and minority ethnic communities
