This session examines the experience of parents who abuse substances or have dual diagnosis presentations and its impact on parenting capacity and children's development.
Objectives

Discuss the prevalence, nature, clinical signs, and symptoms of the most common substances used by adults

Explore the impact of maternal substance misuse, including'recreational' drugs, opiates, and stimulants on pregnancy and foetal and child development

Discuss the types of risks and impulsive behaviours presented by parents who use substances and examine the impact on children and young people

Examine relevant safeguarding issues of children affected by parental substance misuse

Explore effective early intervention and local parenting programmes for parents, carers, and children affected by substance misuse
The session will be led by Marcia Rice.
