Stones of Croydon: Drawing Tour

Saturday 02 July 2016
13:00 to 15:00

Meeting at the Thornton Heath Pond site, and led by Chris Alton's this 2nd drawing tour in Thornton Heath will focus on buildings, businesses and other street furniture, which are associated with the pond and its historical presence. The tour will also consider the area's previous use as the site of the local gallows – The Wheatsheaf Inn has had recent visits from Ghost Hunters, looking for spirits. According to Mrs Seal (the landlady) the pub was once a court where prisoners were held before being hanged on Thornton Heath Pond, then known as Gallows Green. The gallows stood on the site of a pub, which is also said to be haunted by the ghost of a former landlord's daughter, murdered there - her body dumped in the water of the pond.

Participants will be encouraged to undertake a series of collaborative drawing techniques in pairs or larger groups. Through collaboratively considering the past and future of the buildings/landmarks that they see before them, visualise and articulate your aspirations and concerns for a rapidly changing and developing Croydon.
