What is a Place of Safety?
The police can use the law (the mental health act) to take people from a public place to a ‘Place of Safety’ if they seem to have a mental illness and be in need of care. A Place of Safety is a place where mental health professionals can assess people’s needs and work out the best next steps.

What changes are being proposed?
Currently, there is a Place of Safety in each of the boroughs we serve boroughs (Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark). We are proposing to replace these with one, larger Central Place of Safety on the Maudsley Hospital Site in Southwark.

Open day
Come along to an open day, hosted jointly by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) and local Healthwatch (Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham and Croydon); see the facility and hear proposals about how it could be used.

The event is open to everyone, particularly those who have experienced a mental health crisis - or if you are a relative, friend, carers or support worker of someone who has. You can drop in, or stay for the whole day.

• Take part in workshops to develop the service.
• Hear the perspectives of other service users, professionals and voluntary agencies.
• Find out how the views of service users and carers have been incorporated so far.
