Brighter Beginnings is for parents at the beginning of their journey.

Through a series of four workshops, we will support families to tackle some of the unique challenges they might face in the early years.

Our trainer is an expert parent carer with lived experience of raising a child with special needs and/or disabilities. They will create a supportive discussion over the four weeks. You will have a chance to share questions and chat with other parents in the group. 

You will need to attend all 4 workshops if you can.

The Workshops will take place at Croydon Mencap in Thornton Heath on the following dates:

Monday 9 January 2023 - 10.30am-12.30pm- Toilet training

Advice and strategies for parent carers on how to toilet train a child/children with additional needs.

Monday 16 January 2023 - 10.30am-12.30pm- Managing meetings

It’s very natural to feel overwhelmed about attending a meeting to discuss your child’s specialist needs and get the right support for them. This workshop will help give you the confidence to help you get the best from a virtual or face to face meeting.

Monday 23 January 2023 - 10.30am-12.30pm- Understanding behaviour

Gain a better understanding of why children with additional needs behave the way they do. Learn ways to handle difficult situations in a calm, stress-free manner. Explore ways of supporting and encouraging your child and how to get support and help.

Monday 30 January 2023 - 10.30am-12.30pm- Topic tbc

The topic of the final workshop will be chosen from a selection by the group and could include:

• Early years entitlements

• Support for your child’s anxiety

• Educational support for young children with additional needs

• Speech and language 0 to 5

• Money Matters for parents of young children

• Wellbeing for parents/carers of young children with additional needs
