JunkAction Bin-Making: Cleaner Croydon Community Day

This Mayor’s Community Weekend, Norwood JunkAction and Stanley Arts invite you to join us for a full day of community action, creativity, and connection in the heart of South Norwood.

The day will bring together people of all ages to make a visible difference to our local environment while enjoying a shared creative experience. In the morning, we’ll work side-by-side to collect litter from the Recreation Ground – one of South Norwood’s most loved public spaces. In the afternoon, we’ll clean and sort our collected materials, then transform them into colourful, functional “Junk-Bins” – temporary public sculptures designed to make our park cleaner, brighter, and more inviting.

This is about more than tidying up: it’s a celebration of working together, using imagination to solve problems, and turning something unwanted into something useful and beautiful. With the help of our artist facilitators, volunteers, and Henry, our skilled carpenter, every Junk-Bin will be unique – a collective creation for the community, by the community.

The plan for the day–

• 10:00–10:30 am – Arrival & welcome at the Recreation Ground Gate (Station Road side, near Norwood Junction Station). Sign in, meet the team, and hear how the day will work.
• 10:30–11:45 am – Litter-picking session in the Recreation Ground (tools and safety guidance provided).
• 12:00pm – Walk to Stanley Arts for sorting and safely cleaning selected pieces of litter (all gloves and cleaning materials provided).
• 1:00–2:00 pm – Free lunch and a well-earned break.
• 2:00–5:00 pm – Art-making workshop: design and build your Junk-Bin in a relaxed, supportive setting.

Important to know–

• This event is free to attend, but booking is essential so we can reserve your space and provide lunch, tools, and art materials on the day. Spaces are limited.
• All ages and abilities welcome – no prior experience needed.
• You can join for the full day or just part of it.
